Glastonbury to Frome
After a lovely stay with Rosemary, I set off from a very sunny Glastonbury, with no clouds in the sky!
I started by following roads out of Glastonbury, before joining a footpath along a river. The footpath was nice underfoot and it was lovely to see the sunny fields around me.
At the end of the footpath, I went through a couple of farms and took this next footpath towards North Wooton. The footpath went down a farm track which had been covered in carpet. It was nice and soft to walk on, but I was very glad that the weather was dry as I imagine the mossy layer would be slippery when wet!
After North Wooton, I took some lanes, with high hedges either side. I was glad for a bit of shade from the sun!
Today’s weather was beautiful, but it was definitely a day to wear my sun hat and sunglasses and I took the opportunity to find shade when I could!
After some lanes and footpaths, I took a local cycleway into Shepton Mallet. The path was flat which made for easy walking and quickly got me into the town centre.
I stopped at the Tesco in Shepton Mallet for a cold drink, which I enjoyed along with my lunch in the local park.
I exited Shepton Mallet and joined the East Mendip Way for the afternoon. The East Mendip Way is 20 miles long from Wells to Frome. It was well signposted and well trodden which made for easy navigation.
The way took me over Ingsdons Hill, which gave me lovely views back over Somerset and I could see Glastonbury Tor in the distance.
The East Mendip Way mostly covered footpaths, which I found another new style of stile. This one is definitely not for little legs!
I then continued through some woodland, before coming across Cranmore Tower. The tower is a Victorian folly and used to be open to the public, but it’s now privately owned. The tower was impressive and stood much taller than the nearest trees!
I continued on tracks through the woodland. It was nice to have the dappled shade. The woodland was peaceful and quiet, with only a few birds joining me.
I saw these amazing fungi on one of the trees. The whole truck was covered in them.
After leaving the woodland, I crossed some more fields and passed my first lambs of the trip. The two siblings were cuddled up in the sun together, which was very cute.
The East Mendip Way then took me through some more woodland. The shade made it feel cooler which was nice. The wild garlic was starting to come up, but was not flowering yet. This felt a bit more normal for this time of year, compared to the wind garlic that I found in Cornwall!
I was soon at my campsite for the evening. I quickly put up my tent before going to visit Westbury Guides. It was lovely to share about my adventure and hear about their ideas for their own adventures!
