Day 29: 29/03/26

Great Chesterford to Moulton

After a successful night of staying warm, I packed my tent away and was ready to set off. The sun was shining, and a cool wind kept me from being too warm. I exited Great Chesterford and made my way back into Cambridgeshire.

I left Great Chesterford along the Icknield Way. The footpath took me along fields to Linton. Linton marked the end of Leg 8! The next leg (Leg 9) takes me all the way to Lowestoft, it’s amazing to think how close I am!

Out of Linton, I took a bridleway towards the village of Balsham. This was the wettest path that I’ve had for a while. Though it was nothing compared to some of the footpaths of my first week.

At the top of the hill, I passed a massive water tower. Sat on the top of the hill, it towered over the landscape.

On the way into Balsham, I stopped for a break in the field next to the Roman road. It was interesting to read about the road’s history and wildlife.

In Balsham, I navigated through a series of ginnels. These are the first ginnels of my trip, it was nice to find some.

The footpaths out of Balsham took me along fields, neighbouring a woodland.

The footpath went through the woodland, where I paused for some lunch and marvelled at the dens that had been built.

In Weston Coalville, I went into the church to have a little look. The church was lovely and had some beautiful stained glass windows.

I crossed more footpaths to make it to Brinkley.

Across the village green, Brinkley had an honesty bakery. It was a little shed outside someone’s home. You could buy a collection of cakes, bread and fruit juice. It was amazing. There was even a number you could ring and they would bring ice cream out to you! I treated myself to a carrot cake, which was delicious!

The afternoon took me through the villages of Burrough Green, Dullingham Ley, Dittch Green, and Cheveley. I could definitely tell that I was near to Newmarket. The footpaths wove between horse paddocks, with lots of race horses about.

I reached Cheveley, then followed a lane to Moulton.

I soon reached Moulton and finished for the day.

I had planned to stay in Moulton for two nights, but the room wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I’m very lucky that we have some family friends in the area. So, I’m instead staying with Rosalyn and Gareth who were good friends of my Nonna’s, when we lived in Cambridge. I’m so grateful to them for letting me stay.
