Ardnamurchan to Gortenfern
After an amazing night, I was ready to set off, towards Dunnet Head!
My first stop, was a visit to the lighthouse. It was so tall and towered above me! The visitor centre only opens at 10am, however a member of staff was there really early and kindly let me look around. I brought a fridge magnet, then went on my way. I was really grateful. My back up plan had been to ring them once I got home and ask them to post one to me. That wasn’t needed and it was so nice to select my own!
I then set off along the north coast towards Fascadale. The coast was beautiful. There was a selection of little bays, with beautiful white sand and crystal blue waters. It was amazing.
Along the way, there was this mega stile! It went right over the 6 foot deer fence. I really admired its construction, and I was very grateful that it was there!
The path took me to Pontacuik, then Sanna. It was really interesting to read about the volcanic past of Ardnamurchan and how the crofters farm in the rings that have been left.
From Sanna, I took a path cross country to join the path to Fascadale. I made my way over the bog, but thankfully it was dry.
At Fascadale, I was met by Kathryn. Kathryn is Girlguiding Scotland’s Walking Advisor. She had made a trip out to visit me on Ardnamurchan, which felt really special. She met me with water, then we walked along the road together for a little while. Kathryn then turned around and we made plans for her to walk out to meet me and we would camp together this evening.
I continued along the road all the way to Ockle. The views were beautiful. It was amazing to look out towards the islands. They are definitely somewhere that I would like to explore one day!
I then joined a track, which took me to the path towards Gortenfern.
As I was walking along the path, I met two walkers. I was really shocked when I realised that they were the parents of one of my rangers! It was so funny and completely unexpected to bump into them, and a really nice surprise. It turned out that I’d walked straight past my ranger when I’d gone through Ockle! She’d been sat down by the river enjoying the sun!
The path gave beautiful views down the valley, before I dropped down into the woodland.
I met Kathryn and we chose to camp at the beach. It was amazing to spend another night at the sea. I went for a dip and had a much needed wash!
It was lovely to have Kathryn’s company for the evening as we camped together and exchanged badges too!
